ALUMINUM LONGBOARD

August 2015 - November 2015

PURPOSE

  • Create a custom longboard deck using novel materials and manufacturing methods

  • Build transportation device light enough to carry

  • Experiment with 2D CAD tools and hand drawings to prototype design

  • Learn the nuances of metalworking compared to carpentry

CHALLENGES

  • Working with limited tools and resources

  • Following predetermined designs  during the construction phase

  • Creating a device able to support excess of 250lbs

  • Dealing with excessive vibrations while riding

RESULTS

  • Successful test ride in late November 2015

  • Longboard reliably performed as transportation device for 2 years

  • Additional support added to stress bearing members to prevent flexing while riding

  • Loctite added to nuts to prevent parts from coming undone

LESSONS LEARNED

  • Drafting and creating predetermined designs

  • Sticking to design plan when variables change

  • Metal working skills and material properties
